THE ART OF GLASSBLOWING

Glassblowing, the practice of shaping a mass of glass that has been softened by heat by blowing air into it through a tube. Glassblowing was invented by Syrian craftsmen in the area of Sidon, Aleppo, Hama, and Palmyra in the 1st century BC, where blown vessels for everyday and luxury use were produced commercially and exported to all parts of the Roman Empire.

At first, glass was blown into decorative molds; vessels shaped as shells, clusters of grapes, and human heads were common early Syrian products, but later Syrian gaffers (blowers) executed natural, spherical forms, without the use of molds.

Dance of fire and sand

Glass is the magic itself. This magic made by the masters dances with fire to impress everyone who sees it, and only grace emerges. Glass is an excellent material that helps in showing art.

"Çeşm-i Bülbül" Series

Opaque twist glassware began to be produced by craftsmen in Beykoz during the reign of Sultan Selim III (1789-1807). Rods of coloured crystal glass were incorporated into the crystal glass body and twisted to produce spiraling designs. These designs were likened to nightingales’ eyes, and hence this ware became known as “Eye of Nightingale” in Turkish. Opaque twist glassware is produces by traditional methods by Paşabahçe.

The Magic of The Glass

Amulet & Evil Eye

Since the time of the Phoenicians fine quality beads have been produced in Turkey in primitive glass furnaces. In time eye motifs began to be used on these beads, resulting in the first charms against the evil eye. For thousands of years glass beads with eye motifs were used by the various civilisations that rose and fell in Turkey, and these charms spread to many other cultures beyond Anatolia.Traditional crystal charms produced by Paşabahçe are created by pouring layers of crystal glass in four different colours. Using a mandrel, molten glass is lifted up and poured onto a flat plate. A new colour is added before the lower layer has cooled, and this process is repeated for each new colour. Creation of these free form objects requires a team of four people to work in synchrony. Every charm produced by this method is unique.
